The Scapulothoracic Joint- Understanding Tightness in the Shoulders

Scapulothoracic–not a true synovial joint at all as the scapula only articulates with the rib cage through soft tissue. A number of muscles attach to and around the scapula enabling a potentially wide range of movements of the arm at the shoulder joint. I say ‘potentially’ as poor posture, stress and overuse of the shoulders can result in the scapula becoming locked down by tight muscles. This can cause stiffness, localised and referred pain including the neck and headaches. So, keep moving, particularly if you work at a desk, make hunching the shoulders a habit to avoid. Sports massage and yoga are tremendously useful in addressing these issues.
